TRADITIONS OF THE
IMPERIAL GERMAN ARMY Chris Dale
This
is a sister website to
GermanColonialUniforms.co.uk , studying
various aspects and uniform details of the
Imperial and earlier 19th Century German Armies.
Before going into the
articles below, please take a look at my recent
books studying the histories and uniforms of the
Imperial German Infantry and Cavalry Regiments.
These two
books study the histories of the Prussian,
Bavarian, Saxon and others states infantry and
cavalry regiments, from their formation up to
the end of First World War. Their many uniform
distinctions are described, illustrated and
photographed throughout. Both books are over 250
pages in full colour, with photographs from
modern museums and private collections and new
illustrations of every regiment in a clear chart
format.
“Every once in a
while, a book comes along in the World War One
niche that makes you pause, catch your breath
and realize what you have just digested. This
timely and authoritative book should be on the
shelf of every serious student of the First
World War.”

A look at the Liechtenstein contingent
and their uniforms with photos from the
Liechtenstein Landes-Museum collection
and research from CT.
Following the Napoleonic Wars the German
Federal Parliament in Frankfurt (of
which Liechtenstein was a member) called
upon every state to provide an armed
force in case of war. The size of the
armed force was set at 1.5% of the
population, so the tiny Principality of
Liechtenstein's contingent was 82 men in
1862.As a very small mountainous country
sandwiched between Switzerland and
Austria, it was unique among the many
small German states in not having a land
border with any member of the German
Confederation other than Austria.
